The City of Calcutta often referred as the City of Joy is the food lovers heaven. In a recent study by the Times of India it was revealed that the City of Calcutta is having the highest variety of street foods when compared to any other metro city in India. The streets of the City of Calcutta have many tastes to offer from different parts of the World. Despite of so much food being available in the streets of Calcutta some Foods are there that are only available in the City of Joy. Some of those mouth watering food are:
Phuchka at Vivekananda Park

Phuchka

                    Phuchka is quite similar version of the Pani-Puri of Bombay and Gol-Gappe of Delhi. It is a Small Round Crunchy Puff full of a mixture of Mashed Potatoes, Chick Pea, Coriander, Onion, Spices and Lime which is dipped in water flavored by Tamarind, Chilly and Jal-Jeera. It is a street food to die for and is one of the most favorite snack of the people of Calcutta. It is a food to quickly munch upon for a journey of whole lot of flavored from spicy to sour and sweet. Phuchka is available on every part of the city as it is one of the most consumed street food. Best place to have Phuchka in the city include Vivekananda Park and Bhawanipore Crossing. 

Kaathi Roll

              The Kaathi Roll that originated from the 'Nizams' of Esplanade region is one of the unique street food available at Calcutta. It's a simple food with a distinct taste that can easily make place in anyone's heart. The Kaathi Roll is basically Chicken or Mutton Kaathi Kebab rolled in a thin Laccha Paratha with some Onion Slices, Chilly, Spices and Lemon. The stuffed juicy meat being Kathi Kebab easily melts in mouth and delivers a unique flavor in combination with the sweet Laccha Paratha. The best place in the town to grab your Kaathi Roll include 'Nizams' at Esplanade and 'Kusum Rolls' at Park Street.

Fish Fry

             Fish Fry is one of the most loved evening snacks of the people of Calcutta. The dish having it's origin in the Food Cabins of the Calcutta can easily make place in the heart of food lovers. Best quality fish fry is obtained when the Bhetki Fillets are used to make the Fish fry. The Fish marinated in Coriander, Mint, Chilly and spices paste is coated with Bread Crumbs and deep fried to make perfect Fish Fry.                Mughlai Paratha is an street food that can be taken as an entire heavy meal. It is a deep fried square Paratha that is stuffed with Eggs, Crumbs, Onion, Chilly and a ton of Spices. The Mughlai Paratha is accompanied with a tight Potato curry, Ketchup and Onion slices. A perfectly crafted Mughlai Paratha is crunchy from outside and tender from inside, it is best served in the Old Cabins of the city. For having the best Mughlai Paratha in the City of Joy one can visit 'Anadi Cabin' at Esplanade or 'Das Cabin' at Gariahat.

Egg Devil

                          One food available at the City of Joy that every Egg lover will surely love is Egg Devil. Egg Devil is a large sized fritter made up of Boiled Egg and Cooked Spicy Mashed Potato coated by dipping in a batter of Gram Flour and deep frying it. A hot Egg Devil served with Tomato Ketchup and Salad can beat any other street food in taste. The Egg devil is available at different small fritter shops througout the city. one can have the best Egg Devil at the 'Maidan Canteen' near the Maidan area of Calcutta.

                           One can munch on a variety of  street foods in the City of Calcutta as the city has more than enough choices to offer. The street foods mentioned above are some of the most popular and loved ones. One can have a whole lot of food in Calcutta as each and every part of the city have some unique food and story associated with it.

Call Me Kal kataa...

T he 'City of Joy','City of Palaces','Calcutta' or 'Kolkata' we might call the magnificent city by any name but it all started with "Kal kataa hoye chilo" meaning "I cut it yesterday" in 'Bengali'. There is no official documentation regarding the foundation or naming of Calcutta (Presently Kolkata). According to all the documented prooves the three villages of Kalikat, Gobindapur and Sutanuti along the banks of river Hooghly, later on turned to the present day Calcutta during the late 17th century. In 1698, the British East India Company bought the three villages of Kalikat, Gobindapur and Sutanuti from the local Zamindar (Landlord) family of Sabarna Roy Choudhury.
